Captain Stebbings is taken captive by the Continental Army (specifically by Colonel James Fraser) after a fight among the crews of the Teal, the Asp, and the Pitt. Captain Asa Hickman of the Asp had been searching for the Pitt with the intent to kill Captain Stebbings for the death of his brother Theo Hickman.

Captain Stebbings is wounded during the fight, and is treated by Claire Fraser for several weeks until the Siege of Fort Ticonderoga. He accepts no help from the other surgeons, and Guinea Dick stands guard over the captain until the British take back the fort from the Americans.
