1) The clans were tanist, and while I can't say I'm very familiar with that system, essentially Jamie could have been competition for Dougal, as an able-bodied male of MacKenzie blood. Dougal's concern would have been, if Jamie had sworn fealty to the MacKenzies, then upon Colum's death, if some of the men of the clan wanted Jamie as laird, and others wanted Dougal, there could have been fighting within the clan until one came out on top. At least that's how I understood it.
