Sir George Stanley is the third husband of Benedicta Grey.

Sir George was knighted for his military service. His family was involved in trade, specifically in banking and shipping.

Sir George is engaged to marry the widow Benedicta Grey, and dines with her two sons that live in London, Hal and John. He brings along his own stepson from another marriage, Percy Wainwright, for whom Sir George thinks of buying a commission.

Physical Appearance[]

George is a bit taller than his stepsons John and Harold and quite stout, with a round cheerful face that is "rosily guileless". His features are nondescript except for a pair of wide brown eyes that give him "an air of pleasant expectation".[2]

Name[]

  • George comes from the Greek name Γεωργιος (Georgios) which was derived from the Greek word γεωργος (georgos) meaning "farmer, earthworker", itself derived from the elements γη (ge) "earth" and εργον (ergon) "work".[3]
  • Stanley is from a place name meaning "stone clearing" in Old English.[4]
