Name[]
- Robert is from the Germanic name Hrodebert meaning "bright fame", derived from the Germanic elements hrod "fame" and beraht "bright".[1]
- Murchison is an anglicized form of Scottish and northern Irish of the Gaelic name Mac Mhurchaidh (in which the Gaelic patronymic prefix Mac has been translated into the English patronymic suffix -son). Mac Mhurchaidh is a patronymic from the personal name Murchadh, composed of the elements muir 'sea' + cath 'battle', hence 'sea warrior'.[2]
