Outlander series[]

The Fiery Cross[]

Lillywhite attends the Gathering at Mount Helicon in 1770 with several other high-ranking North Carolina officials. While at the Gathering, he arrests Father Kenneth Donahue. Lillywhite shows open disdain for Catholicism, and reluctantly allows Jamie private confession with Father Kenneth.

It is later revealed that he had arrested Father Kenneth to prevent Jocasta Cameron from marrying Duncan Innes, giving his friend (and Jocasta's rejected suitor) Lieutenant Wolff more time and opportunity to marry Jocasta, by force if necessary.

He had also been working with Stephen Bonnet, David Anstruther, and several others to smuggle whisky into the colonies. After learning that Jamie intends to sell a cache of whisky to a local smuggler, they attempt to intercept the merchandise. Anstruther and Lillywhite attempt to kill Jamie and Roger, but instead Jamie kills the former and Roger the latter.

Personality[]

Murderous tendencies aside, he is extremely well-mannered. He speaks with an "aristocratic drawl."[1]

Physical Appearance[]

He is described as a "tall, rather drooping man."[1] He is normally well-dressed, often wearing a bottle-green coat with silver buttons. He wears a wig.[2]

Name[]

  • Randall derives from the English surname via the given name Randel, which is a medieval diminutive form of names (e.g. Randolf) beginning with the Germanic element rand meaning "rim (of a shield)".[3]
  • Lillywhite is an English nickname surname was originally used for a woman, denoting one who was "white as a lilly", but it also applied to a man in the sense of "one who had a fair complexion".[4]

Trivia[]

  • He may have a second cousin by the name of Alexander who later serves as a Colonel in the American Revolution.[5]
  • Accidentally referred to as Randall Lillington on several occasions[6][7][8] in later books. This has been confirmed as a continuity error.[9]
  • Diana has stated that Randall Lillywhite is a separate character from the real historical Lillington.[9]
