Peter Bewlie is a settler on Fraser's Ridge.
Personal History[]
Peter Bewlie was one of the earliest settlers on Fraser's Ridge. He was originally from Scotland. Given his use of the name "Mac Dubh," he may have known Jamie Fraser at Ardsmuir Prison. By 1770, he was married to a Cherokee woman and in close contact with her family.[1]
Events of the Novels[]
The Fiery Cross[]
Peter Bewlie accompanies the party of Indians who spoke to Jamie about the supposed "ghost-bear" stalking the local settlements and villages. He is also a member of the hunting party, and present when the bear is killed.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes[]
Brianna mentions that Peter Bewlie and his Cherokee wife often assist Ian as translators when Ian visits Cherokee villages for trade purposes.[2]
Physical Appearance[]
Peter is "short, squat, and genially bearded."[1]
Name[]
- Peter is derived from the Greek Πετρος (Petros) meaning "stone".[3]
- Bewlie most likely derives from Beaulieu Abbey and village, in Hampshire. This place name, which translates from the French as 'beautiful place,' is pronounced 'Bewley' in English. There is also the possibility of a direct connection with similarly named places in France, such as Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the Cote d'Azur.[4]
