The "Outlander" ghost was an apparition witnessed by Frank Randall in Inverness, Scotland, in 1945.[1] Frank later recounted his experience to his wife, Claire.
Outlander series[]
Outlander (novel)[]
When Frank Randall returns to the bed and breakfast at which he and his wife, Claire, are staying, Claire asks him if he's seen a ghost after she notices that he looks pale and disturbed. Frank admits that perhaps he has, and Claire presses him for details. He describes a man standing in the road, apparently looking up at Claire in the window of their room while she brushed her hair by candlelight. Frank adds that the man seemed terribly unhappy, though he couldn't see his face clearly. Frank tried to get his attention, and when the man didn't react, he reached out to touch him, but before he could the man turned and pushed past Frank, and walked away down the road.
When Frank watched the man walk to the end of the road, the man seemed to disappear before turning the corner. Frank also notes that what really disturbed him about the whole experience was that, despite the strong wind blowing, the man's plaid and kilt "didn't move at all, except to the stir of his walking."[2]
Physical Appearance[]
Frank describes the man as a "big chap", dressed in the traditional Highland dress of kilt and plaid, complete with sporran and a running stag brooch.[2]
Trivia[]
- Though the ghost is not mentioned in the series after Frank's retelling in Outlander, Diana Gabaldon has confirmed online that the ghost is Jamie,[3] at about age 25.[4] She has also emphasized that it cannot be a time-traveling Jamie.[5]
TV Series[]
In the series premiere, Sassenach, Frank sees a man (played by Sam Heughan) in the road. Later, in Both Sides Now, a likeness resembling Jamie Fraser has been drawn based on Frank's description of the man he saw staring up at Claire through the window.

- ↑ In the American printing of Outlander, Claire goes through the stones on May 1, 1945. The date was changed in the UK printing (published as Cross Stitch) to May 1, 1946, which the editor thought was a more reasonable time for Claire and Frank to make their post-war trip to the Highlands.
