Ocracoke is a small island off the coast of North Carolina. Located on the island is the northernmost portal in the Bermuda Triangle group of time portals. The exact location of the portal is marked by four standing stones.[1]

History[]

Historically, the island of Ocracoke was used as fishing and hunting ground by the local Indian population, but it was never permanently settled. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the island was intermittently considered a pirate haven. By the mid-18th century, it had been sparsely settled by colonists. By 1800, the population was listed as 139 people, most of them connected to boating or fishing industries. Today, the island is a minor tourist spot, with just under a thousand permanent residents.[2]

Events of the Novels[]

A Breath of Snow and Ashes[]

Wendigo Donner traveled to the past via the stones on Ocracoke. He tells Claire and Brianna that Ocracoke is part of a larger network of portals. According to Raymond, Ocracoke is one of the safer portals in the region, possibly because it's marked with stones.[1]

Stephen Bonnet has a large gray-clapboard house on the island, half-hidden by trees. Bonnet uses his home on Ocracoke as a hideaway for smuggled goods and illicit meetings. In August 1775, Bonnet kidnaps Brianna and brings her to Ocracoke. He intends to sell her, and several potential customers visit the island to view Brianna.[3] However, Roger, Ian, Jamie, and Claire find Brianna before he can do so. They return to the mainland along with Phaedre, who had been kidnapped and brought to the island the year before.[4]

A year later, the Frasers return to Ocracoke so that Roger, Brianna, and their children can travel back to the present. All four are able to pass through the portal, though it's a traumatic experience. They arrive on the island circa 1978, where a local motorist gives them a ride to the village.[5]

Written in My Own Heart's Blood[]

In 1980, though Brianna considers going through the stones at Ocracoke, she ultimately travels via Craigh na Dun instead.[6]
