A Breath of Snow and Ashes[]
Mrs. Sylvie runs a modest but popular brothel in Cross Creek. Her regular customers include Manfred McGillivray and Ian Fraser Murray. In 1774, she is visited by Jamie and Claire Fraser. To her dismay, they inform her that at least one person in her establishment appears to have syphilis. Though Mrs. Sylvie invites them in, she refuses to believe that she or any of her girls have the pox and is horrified by Claire's treatment method (penicillin injections). Jamie challenges her to a game of cards; if she wins, she gets a cask of Jamie's best whisky, if she loses, Claire gives her and the girls penicillin injections. In the end, she loses and Claire is allowed to treat Mrs. Sylvie and her three girls.[1]
An Echo in the Bone[]
As the war begins, Mrs. Sylvie's business falters - money and resources in the colonies have become scarce. Though men still visit, they often have little to offer in the way of payment or refuse to pay her at all. When Ian Murray appears on her doorstep offering a fat purse of gold in exchange for apprenticing Trudy and Hermione Kuykendall, Mrs. Sylvie agrees.[2]

A few years later, Mrs. Sylvie encounters Ian and Rachel Murray, and is amused to discover that her former customer has married a Quaker.[3]
