Mr. Bodley is the steward at The Society for the Appreciation of the English Beefsteak, a position he has held since at least 1744.[1]
Personal History[]
Mr. Bodley has worked as a steward at The Society for the Appreciation of the English Beefsteak for at least a decade, and is well-acquainted with the habits of John Grey, Harold Grey, Harry Quarry, and other Beefsteak members. He has been chief steward at the club since 1758.
Lord John Series[]
A Fugitive Green[]
Mr. Bodley was frequently on hand during Hal and Harry Quarry's discussions at the Beefsteak. When he serves the men eel pies, the smell reminds Hal of the woman he met breaking into his study and inspires Hal to redouble his efforts to find her.[1]
"Lord John and the Haunted Soldier"[]
Mr. Bodley is mentioned again when John meets with Harry Quarry to discuss the accident at Crefeld. He serves them lamb and wine. At one point, Lord John chokes on a roll and he strikes him on the shoulder blades to dislodge it before wordlessly returning to pour the wine. He is described at this point as Chief Steward, and may have been promoted.[2]
The Scottish Prisoner[]
Mr. Bodley is present when Jamie Fraser visits the club with John. During the visit, John Grey very nearly comes to blows with Edward Twelvetrees, making Mr. Bodley visibly nervous.[3]
Outlander Series[]
An Echo in the Bone[]
Mr. Bodley serves John turtle soup and sherry when Lord John returns to the Beefsteak after his time in the colonies. He also gives John a letter from William.
