Much of her early life is unknown. She lived in or around Parson's Green on Peterborough Road in London at/around 1744 when A Fugitive Green takes place. She is married with at least one child, a son named Joshua. She and Minerva's father provide for the upkeep of Sister Emmanuelle.

A Fugitive Green: Minerva establishes contact with Miriam when she is doing business in London for her father. Miriam tells Minerva of the circumstances surrounding her conception and birth and takes her to see Sister Emmanuelle in her anchorage.

Miriam is the Hebrew form of Mary. It is used in the Old Testament, where it belongs to the elder sister of Moses and Aaron. She watched over the infant Moses as the pharaoh's daughter drew him from the Nile. The name has long been popular among Jews, and it has been used as an English Christian name (alongside Mary) since the Protestant Reformation.[1]
Simpson is an English surname, meaning "son of Sim", Sim being a medieval short form of Simon.[2]
