Michael FitzGibbons is the abbot of the monastery at Inchcleraun in Ireland, and cousin of Murtagh FitzGibbons Fraser.

Through Tobias Quinn's influence a reluctant Jamie Fraser, while traveling through Ireland with Lord John Grey to apprehend Gerald Siverly, comes to the Inchcleraun monastery and meets Abbot Michael. Quinn having wanted him to retrieve a cup that would somehow help to bring the Irish Jacobites to the call. Michael tells Jamie about the cup and takes him to where it is located. Jamie however, does not wish to be the chosen or worthy one to take the cup and tells Michael about Quinn instead.

Michael FitzGibbons is comparable to a leprechaun. The man comes up to Jamie's elbow but stands "straight as a sawn-off arrow," with a stiff white beard and a pair of green eyes, bright with curiosity.[1]

- Fitzgibbons (alternatively Fitzgibbon) is derived from the name Gibb, a short form of the Norman personal name Gilbert. This name was originally derived from the name Gislebert, which is comprised of the Germanic elements gisil "hostage" or "noble youth," and berht "bright" or "famous." The name features the distinctive Irish patronymic prefix "fitz," which means "son of" in Anglo-French. The Gaelic form of the surname Fitzgibbon is Mac Giobúin.[3]
