Maude DeVane is the wife of Lord John Grey's eldest half-brother, Edgar DeVane.

Personal History[]

Maude married her husband in approximately 1739, and lives with her husband and two daughters at Blackthorn Hall in Sussex. Her husband owns and operates a powder mill. In 1758, her husband runs for a seat in Parliament, though he loses to Mortimer Oswald.

Lord John and the Haunted Soldier[]

After the Commission of Inquiry interrogates Lord John Grey about his communication with Edgar DeVane, Lord John stays at Edgar and Maude's house, Blackthorn Hall, in order to investigate further. Maude is polite to him, but becomes far more warm towards him after find out he's been declared the "Hero of Crefeld."

Personality[]

Maude is a social climbing woman who is immensely proud of the name DeVane, something Lord John finds rather tiresome. She is rather overbearing.

Physical Appearance[]

Maude is "a tall woman, and handsome, her dark good looks a proper match for Edgar’s."[3].

Relationships[]

Maude is responsible for keeping up correspondence between Edgar and his mother, Benedicta. She is close to Lord John, though he does not particularly like her.

Name[]

  • DeVane is an Irish name originally written in a Gaelic form as O Daimhin, derived from the word damh, which refers to "an ox" or "a stag".[4]
