"The Custom of the Army"[]

In Quebec, when Lord John Grey discovers Malcolm's infidelity, he confronts him, furious. Malcolm admits that he seeks the company of women to deal with the horrors of war.

Malcolm loses his right leg below the knee during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and is shipped home to England. Meanwhile, his lover dies of smallpox, and his son is left with the child's grandmother, who sells the boy to Lord John. Grey leaves the boy in the care of a French mission priest.

"Besieged"[]

As of 1762, Malcolm has taken up a diplomatic position in Havana. A heavily pregnant Olivia and their two children have recently joined him in Cuba and are living at a home in the countryside. Malcolm is also having an affair with one of his servants, a young woman called Inocencia.

The role is a delicate one, as the English and Spanish are about to go to war. Malcolm collaborates with enslaved people from several plantations, in the hopes that they will sabotage Spanish equipment in exchange for their freedom. When John arrives in Havana to tell Malcolm that the British are about to begin an invasion in Havana, he is eager to get Olivia and the children out of harm's way, but continues with his plan of sabotage. However, he is arrested and imprisoned in Havana's fortress, and gets a letter to John urging him to carry out the plan in his stead. John does so, and frees Malcolm.

During this time, Olivia had given birth to their second daughter, whom she named Seraphina and died of yellow fever, along with their two-year-old daughter Charlotte.

Physical Appearance[]

Stubbs is aptly named, no taller than Grey himself, but roughly twice as wide, with a broad cherubic face, wide blue eyes, and a breezy manner that endeared him to his troops, if not always to his senior officers.

Relationships[]

Olivia Pearsall[]

During the final plannings of Olivia Pearsall's wedding to Joseph Trevelyan Olivia met Malcolm and the two secretly courted. When Joseph went missing and the wedding was called off Malcolm sought approval for his marriage to Olivia from Lord John Grey, who in the absence of Harold Grey was head of the Grey Family. Wishing for his cousin to be happy and knowing that soon Stubbs, like he, would be shipped out with his regiment, agreed to the union. The two welcomed a son, Cromwell, during her aunt's wedding on February 27, 1758. They welcomed a daughter, Charlotte a year later. Their third child Seraphina was born in Cuba just before the outbreak of war with Spain. Sadly, soon after Seraphina's birth, Olivia and Charlotte passed away from yellow fever.

It is unknown whether Olivia is aware of Malcolm's infidelity or his illegitimate son, John Cinnamon.

Name[]

  • Malcolm is from the Scottish Máel Coluim which means "disciple of Saint Columba".[1]
  • Stubbs it is possibly a topographical but is usually locational deriving from the village of 'Stubbs' near Pontefract in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and virtually all the early name recordings are found in this area. The origin is from the word stybb and this refers to an area of ground covered by tree stumps, probably following a forest fire. The name later was applied as a nickname to people of short and/or stocky build.[2]
