London is the capital and most populous city of both England and the United Kingdom. It is a particularly important part of the Lord John series. A number of the Lord John books feature or are entirely set in the Greater London area.
History[]
London was founded by the Romans in the first century, and has been the largest city and political center of what is now the United Kingdom since at least the 12th century. In 1666, the Great Fire of London severely damaged the city centre, spurring a large amount of innovative architectural work. This trend continued into the 18th century, when London's geographical area and population grew more rapidly than ever before. Though 18th century London was often unsanitary and crime-ridden, it was also a highly international city with a wide-reaching influence in finance, culture, and politics.[1]
