Lissa Garver was a laundress who lived in or near Cross Creek, North Carolina. She died of a hemorrhage following a crude abortion.
Personal History[]
Little is known about Lissa, other than that she worked as a laundress, was not acquainted with anyone at River Run, and knew Sergeant Murchison.

Drums of Autumn[]
Lissa was found near death in the overseer's quarters at the mill of River Run plantation. Having smelled blood while walking late at night, Jamie and Claire Fraser go to Lissa's bedside, but within moments Claire realizes they have found her too late; she has lost far too much blood. Still, Claire examines her body to locate the source of the bleeding, and discovers that she is hemorrhaging from her womb. They try to coax the woman into telling them who did this to her, but she can only get out the words, "Tell...", "I die...", and "Ser... geant... tell... him..." before she dies.
The next day, Claire and Jamie explain to Farquard Campbell that they left everything as they found it the night before, including the kitchen skewer covered in dried blood on the bed. They allow Campbell to come to the conclusion that the woman attempted the abortion on her own, withholding the logical point that, had she worked alone, the woman would certainly have stayed at her own home, rather than seek out a strange place. Since she mentioned a sergeant, Campbell advises Jamie to seek out the army sergeant at the royal warehouse.
Upon finding Sergeant Murchison, Jamie asks him to identify the woman, if he can. Murchison's strong reaction to the sight of the woman reveals at once that he recognizes her, and he confirms that she was a laundress by the name of Lissa Garver. Jamie asks if she had a husband, and Murchison reacts violently, claiming that it's none of Jamie's business. He insists that he will make arrangements for the body, and demands that Jamie make a formal written statement.
Physical Appearance[]
Lissa had fine brown hair and fair skin. Claire noted that her features seemed unremarkable, but allowed that it may have been her manner and personality that made her attractive while alive.
