Jezebel Hatfield Morton is the first and legal wife of Isaiah Morton.
Personal History[]
Little is known about Jezebel Hatfield Morton. Given her accent, it is likely that she was born in the colonies. Sometime before 1770, she married Isaiah Morton. She lives in Granite Falls.
Events of the Novels[]
The Fiery Cross[]
Apparently unbeknownst to Jezebel, her husband begins sleeping with young Alicia Brown in Brownsville. In December 1770, Isaiah and a pregnant Alicia run off together. Later, Jezebel's husband fights at the Battle of Alamance, where he is shot by members of Alicia's family. Barely alive, Isaiah asks for both Jezebel and Alicia to be contacted. However, he later recovers.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes[]
In August 1774, Jezebel Hatfield Morton travels from Granite Falls to Cross Creek to find her husband Isaiah. She tells Claire that she plans to find him and kill him. Claire denies knowing where Isaiah is but minutes later, Jezebel sees Isaiah (along with Alicia and their daughter) in the street. She runs after him, firing a fowling piece in his direction as he scrambles away from her.[2]
Personality[]
She is a rough and straightforward woman.
Physical Appearance[]
She is stocky. She has a heavy face and a pug nose. She normally wears her dark hair in a braid rather than wearing a cap.[2]
Name[]
- Jezebel from the Hebrew אִיזֶבֶל ('Izevel), which probably means "where is the prince?", a ritual question spoken in ceremonies honoring Baal. Alternatively, it may mean "not exalted". In the Old Testament Jezebel is the evil wife of Ahab, king of Israel.[3]
- Hatfield is an English habitational name from any of the various places named Hatfield, for example in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Hertfordshire, and Essex, from Old English hæð ‘heathland’, ‘heather’ + feld ‘pasture’, ‘open country’.[4]
- Morton is from a surname which was originally from a place name meaning "moor town" in Old English.[5]
