Events of the Novels[]

Written in My Own Heart's Blood[]

In June of 1777, he is stationed in Monmouth, New Jersey, along with the bulk of the Continental Army. Like the rest of the army, he is anxiously awaiting the coming battle.

After learning that Claire has a cache of supplies, he takes it upon himself to enter her medical tent and rifle through her medical chest. When Claire interrupts and confronts him, Dr. Leckie is defensive and initially refuses to believe that the supplies belong to Claire. When Claire insists, he concludes that Claire's husband must be a physician. An exasperated Claire corrects him, but Dr. Leckie still appears confused by the notion of a female physician.

When a patient of Claire's arrives at the tent, Dr. Leckie offers his own diagnosis and is brusquely corrected by Claire. Furiously, he tells Claire that he attended the Medical College of Philadelphia, but Claire is unimpressed. He leaves in a huff.[1]

Early on the day of the Battle of Monmouth, Dr. Leckie and other army surgeons are setting up to use a nearby church as a makeshift hospital. Dr. Leckie spitefully tells Claire that there's no room for "cunning women" in the church. When Denzell Hunter defends Claire, Dr. Leckie discounts him too as a "male midwife." Claire ends the argument by announcing that she will be performing triage outside the church, though not before reminding the younger Dr. Leckie that she's seen far more action than Dr. Leckie himself.[2]

When Claire is shot later that same day, Dr. Leckie rushes to treat her. He ably stems the bleeding, but then leaves to treat other patients. A shocked and angry Jamie shouts epithets at him as he leaves.[3]
