Outlander series[]

Drums of Autumn[]

Claire Fraser meets James Hunter at Jocasta Cameron's dinner party held to welcome Claire and her nephew, Jamie Fraser. Hunter speaks frankly about his affiliation with the Regulators. He responds calmly, though heatedly to Phillip Wylie's scoffing at their reputation for violent and lawless behavior. He says that the Justice Dodgson, who had recently been assaulted by the locals, "is a userer, a thief, a disgrace to the profession of law", but he is interrupted before he can finish his thought.

The Fiery Cross[]

In 1771, Hunter becomes involved in an altercation at the wedding celebrations at River Run. Several Regulators are arguing with those who opposed them, and it becomes physical. Hunter takes an opportunity to trip Richard Caswell, a plantation owner from the eastern part of the colony. Caswell's son, George, retaliates by punching Hunter in the kidney; in turn, Hunter slaps George on the nose. Eventually, Hermon Husband breaks up the fight, and proceeds to argue with Robert Barlow, a merchant. Hunter and a few others stand with Husband for moral support, but as the argument dies down, they make the decision to leave the reception, in order to avoid further disruptions to Jocasta's wedding celebrations. Husband asks Claire to offer his "good wishes and ... regrets" to Jocasta, and Hunter bids her tell Jamie that the Regulators will be gathering near Salisbury.

Name[]

  • James is the English form of the Late Latin name Iacomus which was derived from Ιακωβος (Iakobos), the New Testament Greek form of the Hebrew name Ya'aqov (Jacob). Thus, the names James and Jacob derive from the same source. Possible meanings of the name Jacob include "holder of the heel", "supplanter", or "may God protect".[1][2]
  • Hunter is an occupational name which referred to someone who hunted for a living, from Old English hunta.[3]
