In 1761, Lord John Grey arrives in Jamaica with his regiment to quell an incipient slave rebellion, and becomes temporary governor of the island.

At the end of his tour as temporary governor, Lord John finds himself traveling to Cuba to rescue his mother and cousin before the British lay siege to the Spanish-controlled island.

In the course of their search for Young Ian, Jamie and Claire stop in Jamaica in spring of 1767, and stay at Jamie's cousin Jared Fraser's plantation house. They attend the new governor's ball at Kingston, and call on a Mrs. Abernathy at Rose Hall.
