Isaiah Morton is a bigamist from Granite Falls who served in Jamie Fraser's militia in 1770 and 1771.

Personal History[]

While already married to Jezebel Hatfield Morton, he started a relationship with Alicia Brown resulting in her pregnancy. He ends up sneaking away in the night taking Alicia with him having to live in hiding from Alicia's family and from his wife Jezebel.

Events of the Novels[]

The Fiery Cross[]

In December 1770, while gathering more able bodied men for the militia, Roger MacKenzie, Fergus Fraser and the rest of the regiment head into Brownsville while Jamie and Claire Fraser go to the Beardsley's trading post.

Upon the arrival of the militia in the town, Lionel Brown and his brother Richard open fire in an attempt to kill Isaiah, who had dishonored Lionel's daughter Alicia Brown. They miss their target and Morton runs off to hide. Roger and Fergus defuse the situation the best that they can.

Isaiah stayed hidden with the horses while the rest of the militia was given the hospitality of Brownsville. Upon hearing of the militia being disbanded Isaiah holds Jamie at gun point requesting that Claire bring Alicia out so he could speak to her. Claire informs him that Alicia is pregnant.

Alicia and Isaiah run away together in the middle of the night to avoid being caught by Lionel and Richard.

In May 1771, During the Battle of Alamance, Lionel and Richard Brown set their sights on Morton, shooting him in the back. Thinking they killed him, they do not report in after the battle. However, Claire is able to save Morton's life. Beyond Claire's medical attention Morton had the will to live as he'd promised to see Alicia again and be there when their baby is born. Alicia arrives, far along in her pregnancy, while Morton is recovering from his injuries.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes[]

In August 1774, Jezebel Hatfield Morton, while hunting for her bigamist/cheating husband, meets Claire Fraser while in Cross Creek. She asked if Claire knew where he was. Claire lied saying she thought she'd heard he was working in Guilford or Paleyville despite knowing he was actually living in Hillsborough with Alicia Brown and their daughter. Though Claire had seen him earlier that day in Cross Creek at the cooper's.

Jezebel does find Isaiah, firing her fowling piece by Claire's ear, missing him as he runs away. Jezebel continues her pursuit after him.
