Hillsborough is a town in central North Carolina.
History[]
Hillsborough area had long been home to a native American tribes, but they were displaced by settlers in the early 18th century. The town was officially founded in 1754. A decade later, tensions between local farmers and local government erupted into the Regulator movement, in which local farmers sought to reduce their taxes and eliminate the corrupt county and state officials. Periodic skirmishes broke out in Hillsborough, the most notable being the Hillsborough riots of September 1770.

The Gathering at Mount Helicon takes place not long after the Hillsborough riots, and several of the attendees are generally known to be Hillsborough residents who participated in the riots. It is stated that several buildings were destroyed in Hillsborough, and that the local justice of the peace lost an eye.
Brianna later spends time in Hillsborough at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sherston, a wealthy local couple.

Manfred McGillivray flees to Hillsborough after breaking off his engagement with Lizzie Wemyss.
The Browns intend to take Claire to Hillsborough for trial, but she is later taken to New Bern instead.
