Gavin Hayes was a survivor of the Battle of Culloden. He was imprisoned at Ardsmuir after the Rising for ten years.
Personal History[]
Gavin was born in Kilmartin, near the parish of Dundonnel[2] to James and Louisa Hayes. He had a brother who was transported after the Rising, possibly to Virginia, and a son whose fate he did not know.[3]
Events of the Novels[]
Voyager[]
Gavin earns a temporary place near the hearth when he tells the other men in the Ardsmuir cell what he has seen of the new governor. When he's finished, he asks Jamie whether he'll meet with the new governor to air grievances about conditions in the prison, as he was accustomed to doing with the former governor, Harry Quarry.
Drums of Autumn[]
Jamie and Claire Fraser arrive in Charleston to witness Gavin's execution. He was convicted of theft in the amount of six pounds, ten shillings. (A considerable sum, the rough equivalent of £1,000 in modern-day money.)[4]
Personality[]
Gavin was afraid of the dark.
Physical Appearance[]
He was a small man, with a balding head and gray beard stubble on the day of his death.
Name[]
- Gavin is the late medieval form of the name Gawain, which in turn is believed to have originated from the Welsh name Gwalchgwyn, meaning "White Hawk."[5]
- Hayes is a reduced Anglicized form of Irish Gaelic Ó hAodha 'descendant of Aodh', a personal name meaning 'fire'. In some cases, the surname is of English origin, having been taken to Ireland by the Normans.[6]
TV Series[]
Scottish actor James Allenby-Kirk portrayed Hayes in the Outlander television adaptation. His character had a slightly expanded role in the TV series, traveling with the Frasers from Scotland to the West Indies in Season Three. In the book series, he is mentioned briefly while Jamie was at Ardsmuir Prison, but does not appear again until his hanging at the beginning of Drums of Autumn.
