Father Fogden is a disgraced priest who fell in love with and eloped with a married woman named Ermenegilda. He lives on Hispaniola.
Personal History[]
Fogden became a priest around 1742, and served as a missionary of the order of St. Anselm for ten years before arriving in Cuba to continue his charitable work. After a few years there, he met and fell in love with Ermenegilda Ruiz Alcantara y Meroz, the young wife of Don Armando Alcantara. Within six months, they ran away together, and only escaped by luck, for the English invaded Havana the same day they eloped.
They lived on Hispaniola for two years before Ermenegilda died. Fogden buried her beneath the bougainvillea. Ermenegilda's mother continued to live with Father Fogden, for she would not leave Ermenegilda.
