Outlander Series[]

Voyager[]

Duncan is found wandering on the moor near Ardsmuir, fevered and babbling in a mixture of French and Gaelic with a smattering of English – including the word "gold". Lord John Grey brings Jamie to Duncan to translate his words, as Grey is hopeful that finding the French gold will lead to a pardon from his exile to Ardsmuir. Lord John makes Jamie give his word that Jamie will faithfully translate everything that Duncan says. Jamie does provide a literal translation of everything, but does not tell Lord John that he recognizes Duncan Kerr, nor does he let Lord John know that the words "white lady" have a personal meaning for him. Jamie sits with Duncan through the night, holding his hand and talking to him softly until Duncan dies.

Based on Duncan's message, Jamie escapes from Ardsmuir a short while later, following up on the "white lady" or "wisewoman" hint. Whether Duncan meant Claire or the shrine, Jamie doesn't know, but he has to find out. Upon finding nothing but the treasure, he takes only a single sapphire and makes himself known to Lord John Grey's search party, allowing himself to be recaptured.
