Davie Beaton was the physician at Castle Leoch. He died of a fever before the arrival of Claire Beauchamp.
Personal History[]
As a member of a family well-known for their healing skills, Davie Beaton was employed as the physician of Castle Leoch in the mid-18th century. He kept a casebook entitled The Physician's Guide and Handbook, in which he recorded recipes for the treatment of various symptoms and diseases.
Events of the Novels[]
Outlander[]
In 1743, Claire Beauchamp arrives at Castle Leoch, where the clan's chieftain, Colum MacKenzie, takes notice of her skills as a healer. He then offers her the use of the late Davie Beaton's surgery, a musty old dungeon that still contains Beaton's stock of medical supplies. Once the place is cleaned up a bit, Claire uses the space to treat her patients.
Name[]
- Davie is a diminutive of David, which comes from the Hebrew name דָּוִד (Dawid), probably derived from Hebrew דוד (dwd) meaning "beloved".[1]
- Beaton comes from the Scottish names of Macbeth and Bethune, or Beaton. It was first found in the Isle of Islay, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest.[2]
Trivia[]
- The Beaton medical kindred were a historical Scottish group of hereditary physicians from about 1300 to 1750.
TV Series[]
Davie Beaton is mentioned in the television series much as he was in the book series. Colum MacKenzie shows Claire Beauchamp to Davie's surgery, where Claire will now employ herself as physician for the castle.
