Drums of Autumn[]
In summer of 1767, Jamie Fraser purchases Rawlings' medical chest, complete with working microscope, as well as his casebook, from a goldsmith in Wilmington, whose wife had kept the chest after its owner had failed to return for it the year before. He gifts it to Claire as an anniversary present.[1]
The Fiery Cross[]
Through a harrowing experience with the dangerous Stephen Bonnet, and with additional details from Jocasta, Claire and Jamie learn what happened to Dr. Rawlings. He had come to Cross Creek to attend to Jocasta for her eyes, and returned when Hector Cameron also fell ill. During his stay at River Run, he discovered the existence of a quantity of gold on the property. Hector caught him on the grounds searching for it, and killed him. Hector grew too weak to dispose of the body, and so it was hidden inside the mausoleum meant to eventually house Hector's and Jocasta's remains.[2]
A Breath of Snow and Ashes[]
