Claude Beauchamp, Baron Amandine, is the brother of Amelie Beauchamp and Cecile Beauchamp, and brother-in-law of Percy Beauchamp.

Personal History[]

Claude Beauchamp is the only son and the heir of the late Baron Amandine. Claude had an older sister, Amelie, who died in mid-1730s, and has a younger sister Cecile. He inherited his father's estate, Trois Flèches, near Compiègne in France, where he now lives with Cecile and her husband Percy.

Events of the Novels[]

An Echo in the Bone[]

In late 1776/early January 1777, Lord John Grey visits Baron Amandine at his estate Trois Flèches. Grey observes that Amandine may not be politically engaged himself, but used as a front by his brother-in-law, Percy Beauchamp. However, Grey is convinced that Amandine is aware of Percy's political machinations. While at Trois Flèches, Grey meets Amandine's other guest, Benjamin Franklin.

In July 1777, Percy tells Grey the story of Amandine's sister Amelie, and recalls that after Percy found Amelie's marriage contract, he showed it to Amandine, who, after some hesitation, gave his consent for Percy to dig into the matter.

Personality[]

Upon meeting Baron Amandine, Lord John Grey observes that he is a very bad cardplayer, although he isn't stupid.[1] Percy says that Amandine can keep a secret, but is incapable of lying.[2]

Physical Appearance[]

Baron Amandine is a few years older than Lord John Grey. He is short and plump, with an open, pleasant face. He dresses well, but without ostentation. Amandine has a soft, warm, and somehow smoky voice.[3]

Relationships[]

Percy Beauchamp[]

Baron Amandine sometimes sleeps with his brother-in-law Percy.

Name[]

  • Claude comes from the ancient Roman name Claudius, which is derived from Latin claudus meaning "lame, crippled".[4][5]
  • Beauchamp (English (or Norman origin) and French) is a habitational name from any of several places in France, for example in Manche and Somme, that are named with Old French beu, bel 'fair', 'lovely' + champ(s) 'field', 'plain'. In English the surname is generally pronounced "Beecham".[6]
