In 1759, Caroline attends an electric eel party hosted by Lucinda Joffrey at the Joffrey's London home. Lucinda has arranged for an eel to be brought to the party, and Caroline is excited to witness it, telling her friend Lord John Grey that an electric eel has been known to shock 42 people at once. When John remarks upon the eels appearance, Caroline playfully accuses him of being overly poetic.

While at the party, she is accosted and leered at by Edwin Nicholls, a society poet. She is embarrassed by this display and by Nicholl's attempts to hold her hand, and pulls away from him at the earliest opportunity. However, before she can get too far, Dr. Hunter approaches Caroline and John and invites them to be among those standing closest to the eel. Caroline is nervous but excited by the prospect, and locks hands with John in preparation for the electrocution, though is disappointed with Nicholls manages to maneuver into a position beside her. After the crowd has been positioned, she and the others are electrocuted by the eel. The sensation knocks Caroline and many other guests off their feet. Caroline ends up colliding with Edwin Nicholls who takes the opportunity to kiss her. A protective and still slightly dazed John breaks Nicholls nose. In the confusion and while a panicked Caroline watches, the two duel and Nicholls is fatally injured.

When Caroline's brother learns of the duel, he angrily threatens to duel John himself, while also insisting that John repair Caroline's damaged honor by marrying her. Caroline is distraught over the incident as well as her brother's reaction, and even contemplates running away. Instead, she writes to John, apologizing profusely and begging him to do something.[1]
