Captain Raines was the captain of Jared Fraser's ship, the Artemis. He died on a voyage from Scotland to Jamaica during a terrible storm.

Captain Raines sets sail from Scotland in December 1766 bound for Jamaica. While the supercargo, Jamie Fraser, hires on the crew of the ship, Raines selected Aloysius Murphy as his cook to accommodate his delicate stomach.
During a storm off the coast of Hispaniola, Captain Raines and a few members of the crew are swept off the ship by a huge wave, washed out to sea, and drowned. The remaining crew gave them proper burial.

- A Jewish (Ashkenazic) metronymic from the Yiddish female personal name Rayne, or used as a translation of Hebrew Malka 'queen'.[1]
