Written in My Own Heart's Blood[]
Captain Harkness is a regular customer of Mrs. Abbott's brothel during the occupation of Philadelphia. In June 1777, Captain Harkness and a fellow dragoon visit Mrs. Abbott's where they drink rum punch and survey the women available to them. Captain Harkness is most interested in "Arabella", a tall brunette whom he has apparently spent the night with multiple times in the past.
While in the sitting room at Mrs. Abbott's, Captain Harkness loudly tells his friend how enjoyable it is to sodomize a woman, especially "a girl that hates it." Overhearing, William Ransom is appalled by this conversation, and purchases a night with Arabella before Captain Harkness has a chance. The Captain protests, but leaves angrily.
However, he later returns to Mrs. Abbott's and shows interest in taking the virginity of Arabella's younger sister, Fanny. Arabella and Fanny initially acquiesce, but before Harkness can rape Fanny, Arabella stabs him. She leaves his body behind in the brothel, going on the run with Fanny.
Harkness is initially considered absent without leave by senior British officers, suggesting that Mrs. Abbott concealed his death on her premises.
Physical Appearance[]
Captain Harkness has dark hair and eyes. He is "heavy featured" with prominent jowls. He is approximately 5'10".
