Brian Fraser's ring is a heavy gold band set with a ruby. It was his wedding ring when he married Ellen MacKenzie, and after her death, it passed to their only surviving son, Jamie Fraser.

Brian's ring first appears in Outlander and is referenced in almost every book in the series. Therefore, its appearance in the second season of the TV series, worn by Claire Fraser upon her return to 1948, creates inconsistencies with the book's narrative.

Outlander series[]

On their wedding day, having no ring to give Claire Beauchamp, Jamie Fraser places his father Brian Fraser ring on her right hand, which is the one she is wearing for the occasion. The ring, a heavy gold band set with a ruby, was his father's wedding ring.

Jamie doesn't usually wear it and usually keeps it in his satchel, but he wanted to show it off on their wedding day to honor Claire with his best clothes.

On the day of his meeting with Horrocks, he considers giving it to him in exchange for the information the English defector has on him, but ultimately, it is unnecessary.

When Jamie is imprisoned at Wentworth Prison, Claire meets with the mayor, Sir Fletcher, posing as a family friend. He gives her the box of Jamie's belongings, including the ruby ring; Claire is surprised that it hasn't been stolen.
