Personal History[]

Betty's mother was taken from Africa, likely before Betty was born.[2] Betty herself was enslaved at River Run for the majority of her life. Around 1751 or 1752, she was raped by Hector Cameron, leading to the birth of her daughter Phaedre. According to the laws of the time, Phaedre was also enslaved from birth.

The Fiery Cross[]

In spring of 1771, Betty, like most of the enslaved men and women at River Run, is occupied with serving guests at Jocasta Cameron and Duncan Innes's wedding. Partway through the evening, Jamie Fraser and Brianna MacKenzie find Betty in an apparent drunken stupor near the kitchen garden. They find the circumstances suspicious, and suspect that Betty has been inadvertently drugged or poisoned.

Claire attempts to treat Betty, but finds her task impeded by Dr. Fentiman. He bleeds a still unconscious Betty and administers an enema. Over the next day, Betty seems to be improving. However, the murderer visits her and gives her a meal laced with ground glass. Betty dies in immense pain the following day.

Jamie, Claire, Jocasta, and the others theorize that Betty was given the cup that morning by Lieutenant Wolff to give to Duncan. When Duncan refused the drink, Betty drank it herself. Lieutenant Wolff, fearing discovery, murdered Betty before she could identify him.

Personality[]

Betty was known to tipple when serving drinks.

Physical Appearance[]

She was a black woman. She was somewhat heavyset.[3]
