Alexander Malcolm's printshop was located in Carfax Close in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was owned and operated by Alexander Malcolm with the help of his assistant, Geordie.
History[]
Jamie Fraser, using the pseudonym Alexander Malcolm, bought the premises in Edinburgh around 1765, and started out filling orders for posters, pamphlets, folios, and books. Soon, however, Malcolm began to print more inflammatory, political material, initially at the request of a man named Tom Gage. Gage had spent weeks getting a feel for Malcolm's sympathies, until finally Malcolm told Gage he would print whatever the man liked, and "no King's man would hear of it."[1] Gage encouraged Malcolm to write his own material.
In late 1766, the printshop was burned down after an altercation inside set the building ablaze. Malcolm was able to rescue his printing press, however, and entrusted its keeping to a friend in Edinburgh. Years later, having resumed use of his true name, Jamie retrieved the press and brought it to America.
