Alexander MacGregor was the owner of the Bible that the doctor at Wentworth Prison gave to Jamie Fraser.

Personal History[]

At around the age of eighteen, Alexander MacGregor was arrested for stealing cattle and brought to Fort William. Two weeks before the end of his sentence, he had a private conversation with Captain Jonathan Randall. A week later, with only one more week until his release, he was found hanged in the stable. The prison doctor determined that it was a suicide.

A month later, when the prison doctor treated Jamie Fraser after the first round of flogging, he told Jamie the story of Alex's imprisonment and death, and handed him the boy's Bible. It was clear to both Jamie and the doctor that Alex's suicide was related to the "interview" he had with Captain Randall.[1]

Outlander[]

Slowly Jamie tells Claire's story about Alex MacGregor, who had died at Fort William a month before Jamie was arrested for defending family and home from Captain Jonathan Randall. Jamie tells Claire that "there is a debt owing to Alex MacGregor,"[2] and that the day he kills Jonathan Randall, he will find Alex MacGregor's mother in order to return the Bible and tell her that her son has been avenged.[1]

After Captain Randall rapes Jamie at Wentworth Prison, Jamie admits that he understands why Alex MacGregor hanged himself; if it were not for his Catholic faith, he, Jamie, would also kill himself.[3]

Personality[]

He was a quiet boy and it seemed that he would serve his sentence and be released without any issues.

Physical Appearance[]

He was a handsome young man.
