Alexander Fraser is one of Jamie Fraser's uncles, and abbott at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupré. He is a bastard son of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, and half-brother to Brian Fraser.
Personal History[]
Alexander was born out of wedlock to Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, and a woman named Kate McBryan.
Around 1742, Alexander's nephew, Jamie, was brought to the Abbey with an axe wound in the back of his head. Jamie's maternal uncle, Dougal MacKenzie, thought Jamie would likely die, but the monks nursed him back to health.
Events of the Novels[]
Outlander[]
In 1743, Alexander shelters and tends to a wounded Jamie Fraser, who has been viciously abused by Jonathan Randall at Wentworth Prison. Abbot Alexander administers the Sacrament of Extreme Unction to Jamie when he is very ill with a fever.
Dragonfly in Amber[]
In early 1744, Abbot Alexander receives a request from James of Scotland from his exile in Rome, asking if Jamie can go to Paris, France to assist his son, Prince Charles Stuart.
Personality[]
Alexander cuts a shrewd, formidable figure, but can be gentle when the situation calls for it.
Physical Appearance[]
Stocky and approximately the same height as Claire, with slanted blue Fraser cat eyes and a black beard.[1]
Name[]
- Alexander is the Latinized form of the Greek name Αλεξανδρος (Alexandros), which meant "defending men" from Greek αλεξω (alexo) "to defend, help" and ανηρ (aner) "man" (genitive ανδρος).[2]
- Fraser may be derived from Fredarius, Fresel or Freseau. The earliest recorded versions of the name, from the 12th century, are de Fresel, de Friselle and de Freseliere, which appear to be Norman.[3] Another suggestion is that the Frasers were a tribe in Roman Gaul, whose badge was a strawberry plant.[4]
Trivia[]
- A spelling difference exists between Outlander and it's UK counterpart, Cross Stitch. In Cross Stitch, he is known as Alick Fraser, rather than Alex Fraser.
TV Series[]
Alexander has not appeared in the Outlander television adaptation.
