That could also be an issue since he was meeting with Sir Percy a paying him because he’s being blackmailed. Mr. W was substantially changed and sanitized by the political correctness of our time. I have found that political correctness in college history books as well. This just burns me up. Teaching history is about teaching people what happened in the past, with no bias. It is for the student to decide how they feel about history, so mistakes such as slavery and indentured servitude never happen again. It’s not about finger pointing and rioting for something that happened a 100, 200 or 500 years ago, we can never change. It’s about understanding how and why something happened and how we do not repeat the mistakes made by our ancestors.
Also the binding of women feet is a perfect example, it was extremely painful, cruel and debilitating to these women. Most could never walk again or if they could they would always have walked many steps behind or have to be carried in a sedan chair behind their husbands. It was to dominate women firstly then continued and made in to a status symbol thus desired by the rich and powerful.
This was wrong in so many ways. But we have evolved beyond these antiquated ideas of women slowly in some ways. But, we can never forget it either. It’s a reminder to women that we don’t have to walk behind men and be silent. We can be loud and in the front of anyone on the battle front of war if we choose.
If you wish to learn more about this terrible practice I recommend reading the Pearl S. Buck book, “The Good Earth”. One I believe everyone should read. It is in the fiction section of the library or fiction in the book store. She does accurately describe this terrible practice among others in a true historical period. So, I consider it to be historical fiction. Ms. Buck lived in China and uses this as the setting of this novel and others books to illustrate the plight of women in the Chinese society of the early 1900’s.
